Georgia Southern University was among 119 colleges chosen to work with the newly established United States Naval Community College (USNCC) to create more educational opportunities for military members, according to AllOnGeorgia.
Remote curriculum and course options will be offered. There will be 500 military members participating in the pilot group in January 2021.
However, each year the program is set to expand. Around 25,000 students are expected to attend by January 2023, eventually growing to 50,000, AllOnGeorgia reported.
This is part of the U.S. Navy’s Education for Seapower Strategy, which aims to invest further in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) field.
“At Georgia Southern University, we have strong programs in each of these areas,” said retired Col. George Fredrick, Georgia Southern’s director of Military and Veteran Services, in a statement. “I am confident that our strong educational capabilities and continued expansion of delivery modes assisted in earning this opportunity with the Navy.”
