Congressmen Mike Turner and Anthony Brown has asked superintendents of military service academies in a letter to examine their policies and address racism on their campuses.

Within their letter, Turner and Brown emphasized that “discrimination should not be tolerated” and the “diversity of the student body, faculty and staff should represent the general population.”

Training should also be offered to employees to create a diverse and inclusive learning environment. Additionally, schools should look to address confederate names, statues or symbols located on campus.

Turner and Brown also introduced the Public Accountability on Nominations Offered that Result in Admissions to Military Academies (PANORAMA) Act under the National Defense Authorization Act, which aims to “increase Congress and the service academies’ ability to appoint a diverse student body,” WRGT reported.

“As the incubators of the future leaders of our military, the service academies must initiate the change necessary to eliminate racism in their ranks and build diverse teams,” said Turner in a statement. “That is why Rep. Brown and I have invited the Superintendents of the service academies to brief a group of Members of the Armed Services Committee to ensure that that concrete steps are being taken to address this vital issue.”
