ALBANY, N.Y. — Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed a law to expedite the professional licensing of the spouses of military personnel on active duty who are transferred to New York.
The law, effective in 180 days, will apply to military spouses who have “substantially equivalent” licenses “in good standing” to practice in other states.
It will allow them to obtain temporary practice permits while their applications are pending in New York.
It includes professions licensed by the state Education Department, including physicians, nurses, physical therapists, engineers and mental health practitioners.
The law also cuts their initial licensing application fee in half.
