The American Athletic Conference (AAC) has identified U.S. Military Academy West Point’s athletic arm, Army West Point, as the top candidate to replace Southern Methodist University, ESPN reported.
AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco is exploring Army for expansion and has spoken to Army athletic director Mike Buddie.
Army’s potential inclusion into the ACC would be only for football, much like the Navy’s arrangement with the conference. Them joining would bring the conference’s team total back up to 14, after SMU’s recent announcement that it would join the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in 2024.
Army West Point is currently an independent team with no set conference.
