Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has appointed Brig. Gen. Gregory “Greg” P. Chaney the deputy adjutant general-Army for the state military department.
Prior to his new role, Chaney served as director of the Texas Military Department Joint Staff. Before working as director, Chaney was assistant deputy adjutant general of the Texas Army National Guard from January to March 2018, where he first enlisted in 1987 as a combat engineer.
Chaney was deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 2000 and Iraq from 2004-2005. While in Bosnia-Herzegovina, he was assistant of operations and plans for Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment under the 111th Engineer Battalion in the 49th Armed Division. During his deployment in Iraq, Chaney served as executive officer of the Headquarters and Headquarters Company for the 111th Engineer Battalion and chief of the Multi-National Forces-Iraq Joint Visitor’s Bureau.
As the deputy adjutant general-Army, Chaney will be in charge of coordinating activities for the department with the National Guard Bureau to warrant funding and agreements with other local, state and federal authorities around the missions of the Texas Army National Guard, according to Abilene Reporter News. In addition, he will serve as the commander of the Texas Army National Guard.
“I’m humbled by the opportunity to continue to serve our citizen-Soldiers in Texas,” he said.
Chaney has received several awards and decorations throughout his career in the National Guard, such as the Legion of Merit, the Army Commendation Medal (with two bronze oak leaf clusters), the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal (with a bronze star), the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal.
Chaney earned a bachelor’s in industrial arts education and a master’s in education from Abilene Christian University and a master’s in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College.
