“Dear President Trump,” Kirksville resident Doris Kent began the letter she sent to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue on June 6. “I’m a 91-year-old woman with Parkinson’s Disease and I wish to call to your attention a concern while I am still able. I believe that the women who served in the United States Cadet Nurse Corps 1943-1948 should receive full veteran status.”
Kent enlisted in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps in 1944, when she was 17 years old. For three years, Kent worked to care for patients domestically at a time when many certified nurses had joined the World War II effort abroad, with her training as a nurse kicked into wartime overdrive.
