AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine National Guard members will qualify for new tuition benefits and veterans can receive temporary financial assistance under a new law.
The law allows Maine National Guard personnel to receive a tuition benefit at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy and private, nonprofit post-secondary educational institutions that opt in.
Previously, personnel could only receive tuition benefits at Maine’s university and community colleges system and Maine Maritime Academy. Certain veterans also will be eligible for temporary assistance grants of up to $2,000.
Republican Gov. Paul LePage signed the law on June 25. The law takes effect 90 days after the Legislature’s special session adjourns.
